MARRAKECH 2023

Spending just two nights in Marrakech turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made in my history of spontaneous, off-the-beaten-path trips. The experience was made even more memorable by the company of a special connection, Moulay, whom I met through a mutual friend.

Moulay proved to be one of the most genuine and patient people I’ve ever encountered, serving as an inspiration to anyone who values human connections and a strong sense of community. With every corner we turned, he would spot another familiar face to embrace, exchanging a few heartfelt words of support. All around us, people would glance his way, waving and occasionally seeking him out for a conversation, hoping to gain some of his wisdom or encouragement. Moments like these motivate me to learn Arabic some day.

HANDCRAFTING

Taking a walk with Moulay brought me to parts of town wholly unnoticed by the magnitudes of tourists. Entire blocks dedicated to workshops of individual or small groups of laborers, all who studiously created one specific small part or mechanism designed to serve a small function in the greater whole. I asked for permission to photograph each person, and everyone was incredibly friendly and engaging.
